The Fortress, Sarah's London, Wednesday

Sarah? Still in London. Still at the Fortress. The biggest change was that last night she'd actually slept over at Jenny's, because Don was starting to get sick of her sharing his space. Oh, and she'd stopped a mugging yesterday, when she'd been out buying cigarettes. Nothing grandiose but she figured she'd at least get a mention in New Power Express for it.

Like she figured she should have probably been considering a trip back to Fandom, what with tomorrow being the final session of Wild Roving and all. But she was kind of dreading that.

So, right now she figured it was still time to sit in the same old booth with her friends, and finish this bottle of Green Lamp Ale. Which she was not drinking for any significant reason whatsoever, so kindly shut your gob before she shuts its for you.

Snort. "Well, that would've been more hilarious."

"I'll get to work on learnin'," Guy snarked, lifting his hand toward the bartender in hopes of getting a beer.

Norse Dave the bartender wandered over with mildly raised eyebrows. They didn't get that many new faces at this pub.

"I don't think we have any of your generic American piss over here," Sarah contributed.

"Natty's the only beer that matters," he shot back just to be contrary.

"I dunno what that is but it sounds horrible," Sarah told him mock sweetly, before glancing at the barman. "Give him a Shazamstell please, Norsey."

This was her turf so yeah, she was going to order for him.

Guy rolled his eyes, leaning against the bar top. "You gonna keep hiding here?"

"I'm not hiding." That wasn't defensive at all. "This is my home."

Yes, Guy. This cape bar.

"Yeah, real homey," he shot back. "Add a throw pillow or two and it'll be great."

"Hey, I've been coming here for a long time," she pointed out. "More than can be said for anywhere in Fandom."

And to be fair, the seat in the booth she'd just been sitting in probably had just the slightest hint of her ass print worn into it by now.

"So, you're just gonna stay here then." Look at that frown, Sarah. Look at it!

You know, she'd actually prefer not looking at it? But that wasn't going to stop her from saying stupid things.

"Would it matter if I did?"

Like so.

"You do have a job, you know." AND HE WOULD MISS YOU.

He really should say that out loud, though. HOW ELSE WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO KNOW?

"Sparkle could take care of the final," she scoffed. "And I barely see any kids during my office hour. 'Sides, I stopped a mugging yesterday. That's part of my job, too."

DAMN IT, EMOTIONS. "So, you're gonna just stay here 'cause you were greyscale for a while there?"

Oh yeah, her expression turned immediately a little more sour.

"Don't forget the teenager bit," she drawled.

Yeah, how weird was this conversation to outsiders?

"Yeah, that too."

Well, it probably helped that they had a lot of conversations about people with names like Slicefist all the time?

"And the fight."

That, too.

There was that...

"Because of the teenager thing," Guy replied. "You gonna run every time we fight?"

Oh come on, Guy, if she did that she'd never have time to do anything else!

"Hey, I didn't run because we had a fight," she pointed out. Defensively. "I didn't do anything because of that."

Except avoid him.

"Uh huh." Suuuure. "And you're here because...?"

Sarah made a face at him, as she often did when she didn't have a leg to stand on. "I'm allowed to come home sometimes, you know."

"Most people tell the person they're seein' before they go."

"Well I'm not most people," Sarah said, because that was not a lame thing to say. "And the island was being a fucking knob!"

Of course, that was when Devlin decided to wander up to the bar, all smug swagger, the thick gold chain around his neck showing under his permanently unbuttoned shirt collar. "What's all the noise for, Sarah? Get your period and forget to buy tampons? 'Cause I can lend you a few quid for that in exchange for a favor."

Yes, his tone made it sound pretty lewd. Sarah rolled her eyes.

Guy turned away from Sarah to give Devlin an unimpressed once over. "Anyone here talkin' to you?"

Devlin was going to be equally unimpressed, thank you very much. "Ohh, it's an American." A Yankee in King Excelsor's court! "What's this then, Sarah, your sad substitute for the greatest superhero in the country?"

He clucked his tongue and shook his head at her. (She was just quietly glaring right now.)

"You did always have horrible bloody taste."
