There was a note on Sarah's door today:

It was mostly for the benefit of her next interaction with a takeaway delivery person. This weekend was going to be one of junk food and truly terrible television with absolutely no informational or otherwise current reality-based value whatsoever. She didn't want any well-meaning delivery people bringing up anything to mess with her cocooning.

And, hey, if it also worked on anyone that decided to drop by for a visit without food, all the better. Because seriously, she wanted everyone to just shut the fck up for a couple of days. Just... shush.

But the best way to ensure that people did that was to just lay on the couch in ratty sweats and a t-shirt with only the telly for company. It was working well for her, so far.

Kanan really had no intention of discussing he-who-must-not-be-named today, if only because he still didn't know much about what was going on out there on the mainland, but also because there was an air of paranoia and despair hanging over the island that he couldn't quite ignore. And... Frankly, between that feeling and his own concerns about Vader and the Emperor, he was in bed of a distraction.

So, knowing all of nothing about... That Man, he was knocking on Sarah's door all the same. Sometimes you just needed to pester people.

Sarah considered not coming to the door, since she wasn't currently expecting more food to arrive. But, curiosity won out. (Damn you, curiosity!) So she dragged herself off the couch in all her stay-at-home glory, and came to the door.

And was pleasantly surprised.

"Oh. Hey."

"Hey," Kanan replied, giving Sarah a little, almost sheepish grin. "Thought I'd swing by, see how you're doing. Is this a bad time?"

Like, for Sarah in particular, not in general.

"Not at all," Sarah replied, largely because he hadn't mentioned That Man and didn't seem very likely to. "As long as you don't object to extreme casualwear. Wanna come in?"

"Hey, I've seen you in far more casual than this," Kanan replied with a smirk. Smug nerf-herder. "I'd love to come in, thanks."

Yeah, no That Man conversation was forthcoming from Kanan.

"How're you doing?"

"Bored as fuck, but that's looking up now," she rasped as she stepped out of he way to let him in. Kind of lying about having been bored, really – junk telly was good entertainment – but as far as lies went, it was a pretty small one. "Who knows, may even get more casual than this."

"Well, I, for one, have no objections to a casual evening in," Kanan shared, grinning as he stepped inside. "Especially if it means helping you with that boredom problem. Already I'm seeing an improvement in my own state of boredom, so that's promising."

"And you only have to be more interesting than the Real Housewives of Wherever," she noted as she closed the door again. "'S not that hard. Not that hard's always a bad thing."

"Shameless," Kanan observed with a chuckle. "I like that."

As if there was ever any doubt. Here it was probably a case of like attracting like, really.

"That said, I'm a firm believer in good entertainment. Especially in good company."

"I'm getting too old to bother with shame," Sarah replied with a shrug before turning to pad back into the living room. "It's not very entertaining to feel ashamed." She glanced back. "Fancy anything to drink?"

"I'm not going to say no," Kanan decided, following along after her. "A drink and some shameless company are right about my speed today, honestly."

At least in part because it would be a welcome distraction from everybody freaking out around the island. There were reasons that Kanan tried to wall off his connection with the Force, damn it. This place was starting to make him paranoid.

And Sarah wasn't freaking out, because she was a pro at hermiting it up when things got tense or just... any other kind of negative way that she didn't want to deal with. It could be a valuable skill, sometimes.

She took a detour into the kitchen. "Then you've come to the right place. 'Cos all I've got here is beer and shamelessness."

The lack of freaking out was probably at least part of what had gotten Kanan to decide to visit her at this particular moment, too. Kanan grinned faintly along that detour.

"My lucky day, then." Clearly. "I've found the one person on the island who has both a bastion of sanity and beer."

Sarah snorted somewhere around 'sanity' because there were factors where things had to be pretty bad for her flat to be the place for that. Still, she snagged two bottles of Shazamstell, and opened both before offering one over to him.

"So other than that, how've you been?"

Kanan laughed again, though this time it was more of a wry 'heh' than anything particularly definitive or even necessarily pleasant.

"Honestly? I could be better," he confessed. "I'm still working on figuring this place out, and feeling more than ever like that's something I'm not really going to get a handle on any time soon."

While at the same time wanting more than ever to flee this reality entirely and never look back. So, that was working out great for him.

Sarah snorted again. "Good luck with that, mate," she said, leaning a hip against the kitchen counter before taking a swig from her bottle. "I really don't think there's a way to figure out Fandom. That's why I focus on other things."

Trashy TV and fast food.

"Fandom isn't what I'm having difficulty with," Kanan replied, lifting his own bottle and taking a mouthful before continuing. "Earth, on the other hand? Now there's something I need to work harder to wrap my head around. Figure out what I'm going to do here in the long run, since denial about my ability to take off is only getting me so far. Finally crack and get myself better acquainted with the local technology. That sort of thing."

"Ah, right." She nodded sagely. Ish. By her standards. "That might be somewhat easier. Although possibly about as much of a waste of time."

Though that was mostly because she was a cynic.

"But hey, if any of the tech gives you grief, I can always sort that out for you."

Well, currently Kanan's roommate had him under the impression that Earth's democratic process involved stilts and plague doctor masks, so he could really only get better at this from here, right?

"Yeah? Because I probably ought to start with actually getting a phone," Kanan noted, "and I have no clue where to start. The comms I'm used to are way more straightforward than that."

Not that he couldn't figure out a smartphone if given ten minutes and the WiFi password, but starting out with something half decent still wouldn't hurt.

If you'd asked Sarah, she might've claimed plague doctor masks would've been a vast improvement. But there were reasons as to why they wouldn't be discussing that.

Anyway.

"I meant more that I could tell them to behave themselves." Wait, had she explained about her powers at all? She honestly couldn't remember. "But picking phones isn't entirely outside my area of expertise, either."

Had she discussed her powers? Not really. Heroing, sure, but Kanan hadn't done much in the 'asking for details' department. He figured asking for things like that just opened the conversation up to asking him about his.

He was still pretty terrible at talking about his.

"Well, picking phones, telling them not to give me a difficult time, I'll take either," he decided, tilting his head a little and processing. "Seems like a useful talent, though. Telling them to behave. They actually listen?"

"'S my power," Sarah replied, shrugging. "I talk to machines."

Seemed awfully simple when you put it like that.

"Just have to have a basic understanding of how they work so I can issue commands."

Kanan gave a thoughtful nod of his head at that. Considering the level of technology on this planet, that was a more mean feat than it would sound like back home, he was sure. After all, his galaxy had machines that could talk back. Emphatically so, at times.

"Huh," he decided, and then took another drink from his bottle. "That's a new one to me. Big multiverse, I guess."

Sarah shrugged again. "All kinds, where I'm from. Guess we had to specialize." You would've thought superpowers would've been hereditary at least to some degree, but nope. Everyone affected got their own power that seemed to have nothing to do with that of a parent. "Convenient for cash machines and the like."

She had no morals.

"And the occasional vibrator."

Also no shame, as had already been amply established.

"Sometimes, I use my power to stop crime, but mostly I just make my life easier. Feels like I've earned it."

Well, Kanan wasn't about to argue. It made sense enough to him, if he ignored... basically everything he'd ever been taught, growing up.

"Well, you are helping people," he noted, "so what's the harm in a little self-indulgence?"

Seriously, he had to be at least the second worst Jedi on the island. He'd grow out of it eventually, at least?
