MCA #5, All Day Thursday

To recap, the last week or so in Sarah’s life:

First, three days more or less entirely spent in bed with her ex-boyfriend. Yes, the one who’d fucked off to be a hero in space a few years back. Yes, the one she had not been over ever since. That one. Guy Gardner, ginger bloody menace and royal pain in her heart.

Then, two days and slowly working on making it three spent... mostly in bed, but also on the couch. Alone. Except for a few tubs of ice cream and some now-empty bottles of beer. She hadn’t even bothered to get hammered. She knew that wouldn't actually do anything but make her even more miserable.

As if that was somehow possible.

So anyway, now day three of her moping was dragging on. Maybe tomorrow she'd actually go outside. But she wasn’t counting on it. Not when there was takeout.

Sarah and Guy had mostly thrown down repeatedly over whether children could or should be heroes. It was a weird thing.

She missed it.

"Yeah." She leaned forward and set her carton on the coffee table, on top of a pile of old issues of New Power Express. "Doesn't really matter, though, does it? My heart's still fucking broken."

Okay, between the shit week and the way they'd just screwed up something as simple as a hug, she was officially out of giving a fuck over whether that was something to state out loud.

"No, it doesn't matter."

It rarely did. If it ever did.

Atton put his own carton down, then pushed it further down the table with his boot.

Sarah put her elbows against her knees. Then her face in her hands.

It wasn't a crying thing, it was a 'God I'm exhausted' thing.

"This is so pathetic."

Atton threw her a little glance. "No," he said, "You're upright and eating a few days after this happened. That's not pathetic. Just figuring out how to cope again."

[electrocynic]

"It's pathetic to have to be doing this again."

It was, in fact, worse this time around.

"It sucks to have to do it again," Atton said. "Doesn't make it any less of a kick in the nuts."

[electrocynic]

Sarah pulled her head up to throw him a glance. "Don't have any."

That was inane. She didn't care.

[suitably_heroic]

Atton rolled his eyes. "Kick to the boobs," he said, "Whatever."

[electrocynic]

Sarah snorted.

Which was better than her reactions to most things lately. She sighed and leaned back against couch.

"At least he's alive," Atton offered. "He could get back here some day."

[electrocynic]

"And smash me up into pieces again?"

She rested her head against the back of the sofa, looking up towards the ceiling. Her tone was much milder again. Less with the self-pity, despite the words.

"Suppose so, yeah."

[suitably_heroic]

Atton shrugged. "Maybe if you punch him in the head enough times, he'll lose the hero complex."

[electrocynic]

"Doubt it. It's in his... blood, or something else fucking cliche like that."

Sigh.

[suitably_heroic]

"And there's no way you can get out there?"

[electrocynic]

Sarah made a face. "Space is not for me."

Which was not to say she hadn't spent far too much time staring at portal schedules for Oa. Over the last couple of... years.

Atton shrugged. "'Space' is just another place," he said. "Doubly so, considering how you people use it."

[electrocynic]

"Well it's not one I want to explore, alright?" she replied, glowering at... the middle distance, really.

[suitably_heroic]

"Fine, fine," Atton said, holding up his hands. "I'm just sayin'. No reason to get glowery."

[electrocynic]

"You don't think I've considered that option?"

The glower was much milder when it was directed at him, honest.

"Becase it's pretty fucking obvious."

[suitably_heroic]

"Then why not?" Atton asked. "It's 'pretty fucking obvious' that you care enough."

[electrocynic]

"Because I'm fucking scared!"

Oops.

So, that had been crossed over from snapping right into yelling. She reeled that emotion right back in. "Anyway," she said, with a little sniff and rubbing the heel of her hand over one eye. "The portals are too bloody expensive."

Atton... should probably not suggest taking her up there in the Hawk if she needed him to. That would probably just make things worse.

The sniff got him worse than the yelling, though, and he winced maybe a little. "Okay," he said. "You're scared and broke. I guess that makes sense. If those things are big enough for you."

[electrocynic]

Sarah made a vague grunt of... agreement? annoyance? cover-up for a sob?

She pressed her face into her hands again. This whole thing was just a big old load of bollocks and she melodramatically wished she hadn't bothered to love anyone.

Well, hugs had clearly not worked out for them very well, so Atton wasn't going to try that again unless she made it absolutely clear she wanted one.

Sigh.

He put a hand on her shoulder, instead. That was unhuglike enough, right?

At the very least, she leaned right into that one.

Wasn't really the kind of action you were supposed to lean into, as such, but fuck it.
