Outside MCA #4, Wednesday Evening

Sarah had had a lot of time to be thinking some things over, lately. Especially over the back end of last week, which had been complete and utter bollocks by the way, because trying to smoke on the balcony was not easy when you risked getting bitten by flying fucking sharks in the process of just trying to get your nicotine fix.

So, anyway.

She'd had a lot of time to think, and she was veering closer and closer to a a decision.

Except that was a lie, kind of, because she'd more or less already made up her mind. And that meant one thing: checking in with some people who weren't Jenny and therefore weren't going to just relentlessly gush at her for being so romantic or some other bullshit like that.

And so, armed with far too much beer, she knocked on the door across the hall from hers.

With her foot. Because, see above about all the beer. She had her hands full, so, kicking it was.

"Gizka are these cute little two-legged frog things that Atton has informed me I'm not allowed to keep as pets," Sparkle volunteered. And then blinked and kind of frowned thoughtfully at that next bit. "... Going on a trip somewhere?"

"... You're not running off to go to war or anything, are you?"

Way to put him on alert, Sarah.

Sarah rolled her eyes at the both of them.

"War's been over for a long time," she drawled. Because, yeah, war was why Guy had taken off in the first place. "Nah. I think I'm going to Oa."

A beat.

"That's across space."

Yeah, that wasn't going to help them figure it out, was it? Probably not.

"Across space, like, for the scenery, then?"

At least it wasn't war? Sparkle blinked and squinted a little.

"Wait, you mean you're leaving leaving?"

Oh hey! There was something about this that could actually make Sarah a little uncomfortable. Even if it only showed mildly.

And would only show in this company.

"Yeah," she said, after what may have been slightly too long a pause.

"... Like how far?" Atton said.

He wasn't going to admit to the length of the stunned silence that had prefaced that comment.

"Space is really big," Sparkle added, a bit stunned as well.

That was about the only coherent thought he could scrape together.

Sarah made a face. And then made an attempt at sort of cradling her beer to herself. Or like she was just trying to sink into the couch. "I don't know fucking far Oa is," she said. "Far enough that people don't really come back and visit unless they really need to, is what I've noticed."

"So how is ditching here to go all the way over in 'I don't know how far' planet worth it?" Atton said, sitting forward.

[myownface]

"There, like, has to be something you're ditching for," Sparkle hedged. "You don't just decide to get up and go to fuck only knows where just because... right?"

[electrocynic]

"Obviously."

Probably unfair to be that 'duh' about it when she hadn't actually given them jack shit to go on, here. And yet she did it anyway because...

Well, because she was Sarah, and didn't really know of another way to be.

She drank a long gulp, then muttered, only half-intelligibly, "I'm going to go see Guy."

"Aw, space," Atton said, flopping right back against the couch with his drink. "You're still hung up on that guy?"

"Hey, we've all got our hangups," Sparkle said lightly. It was true enough. There was no way he'd be able to cope with seeing Lewis again, and Atton...

You know. Sparkle wasn't going to go further digging at that. This was Sarah's conversation, for one. And for another, he wasn't that cruel.

"Want to see if he's up for a round two?"

Sparkle hadn't met him, but that much was fairly obvious.

"No, I want to take the most expensive fucking portal imaginable across a universe because I don't give a shit."

Sarcasm. So helpful.

She sighed and rolled her eyes and attempted to sink even further into the couch, as if that was possible. "I know it's bloody bonkers, okay?"

If they started in on Atton's hangups, they'd be here all month. So good call, Sparkle. Frankly, it being August and all, it was a miracle Atton wasn't currently rolling on the floor puking his guts out.

... now there was a thought worth drinking about. Atton took a sip.

"You talk to him about this before you decided to do it?"

[electrocynic]

"... Oa doesn't have mobile service."

So that was a no.

[myownface]

"How about a backup plan if it turns out he isn't there?"

Said Sparkle, master of not bothering with backup plans basically ever.

[suitably_heroic]

"... Or at least a portal home on speed dial if he's got a new girlfriend," Atton added slowly.

[electrocynic]

Sarah eyed them both with scorn.

Unmerited scorn, but scorn all the same. "Jesus fucking Christ, have a little bloody faith," she groused. "I wasn't going to just charge in and make myself at home. If things go to shit, I'm going back to London."

[myownface]

"Fair enough," Sparkle said, holding up his hands in a gesture of surrender. Or, well, one hand and a beer. "We're being pains in the ass because we care, you know that. But if this is what you want, I'm not gonna stop you."

He'd done dumber, anyway. Hell, he'd done dumber for Atton.

Going by the way Atton's hands had shot up at the same time as Sparkle's, you'd almost think they'd practiced this.

"... What the kid said," he said, "Just making sure you have all your angles covered and if maybe we need to stock up on some crappy English beer for later, just in case. Okay? Sorry for caring."

[electrocynic]

Under different circumstances, Sarah might've laughed at the synchronicity.

Now she just simmered down, somewhat. "I know it's bonkers," she reiterated, at her bottle, this time. "But so's staying here and just doing nothing."

She wasn't getting any younger, and the ache of Guy leaving hadn't really ever gone away. (Definitely not after his brief and sudden visit a couple of years ago, either.)

"Also English beer isn't 'crappy' so shut your gob, space boy."

[myownface]

"I'm staying out of the beer fight," Sparkle declared. "I've got a Canadian bias."

In that no beer was Canadian beer, so why even bother with it?

"... But yeah, I can see why just hanging around here spinning your wheels might not be doing it for you."

[suitably_heroic]

"We're not telling you not to go or anything," Atton added again. Just because it felt like the emphasis was required. "It's just... going to be... kind of weird? You know. Not that we're sentimental or anything."

Sarah squinted at Atton.

"... Are you trying to say you'll miss me?"

It was possible she was going to try and take the piss if that was the case.
